|Free one-night self defense course for women Oct. 14|
Sep 26, 2011
(Sept. 26, 2011) North Adams Regional Hospital’s Medical Imaging Department and REACH for Community Health will sponsor a free course in self defense for women on Friday, October 14, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the VNA & Hospice of Northern Berkshire. Space is limited for this free event. Registration is requested by calling REACH for Community Health at (413) 664-5326.
Women age 13 and up are invited. Nathan Sumner of Villari’s Martial Arts Centers in Williamstown will lead the class, which will cover techniques in self defense including strategies for parking lot safety and home safety. “We’ll be teaching good habits that can make you less likely to be a victim of violence,” said Sumner. “Everyone has a fire escape plan for their home, for instance, but not everyone has a plan for an intruder in the house or a parking lot assault.”
“We’re doing this because we believe women should not only be healthy, they should be safe, too,” said Lisa Harrison, Director of Medical Imaging at NARH. “During October we’re putting a lot of emphasis on breast health and mammograms, but prevention is also about making sure we’re safe.”
Participants should wear comfortable clothing and casual shoes.
