(Oct. 4, 2012) Louis Reines, MD, MBA, a general and colorectal surgeon at North Adams Regional Hospital, has earned board certification in colon and rectal surgery from the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery (ABCRS). He is the only board-certified colon and rectal specialist in the northern Berkshire and southern Vermont region.
Dr. Reines joined the NARH Medical Staff in September, 2011. He earned board certification in general surgery in 2011.
The surgeon who has attained certification by the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery has specialized knowledge and skill with regard to problems of the colon, rectum, anus and small bowel. In addition to having proficiency in the field of general surgery, board certified colon and rectal surgeons have attained particular expertise in diagnosis as well as medical and surgical management (including preoperative and postoperative care) in areas including anorectal conditions, hemorrhoids, fissures, abscesses, fistulas, inflammatory bowel disease, chronic ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, diverticulitis, colonic neoplasms, cancer, polyps and other conditions.
The certification process includes an eight-hour written examination, the Qualifying Examination, which assesses knowledge of colo-rectal surgery. That is followed by an oral exam by teams of experienced surgeons called the Certifying Examination, to evaluate the candidate’s ability to manage ordinary and complex colon and rectal surgical problems.
Dr. Reines earned his medical degree and a master’s degree in health management from Tufts University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in general surgery at the University of Connecticut and his fellowship in colorectal surgery at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. His areas of expertise include laparoscopic colectomy, complex ano-rectal surgery and colonoscopy. Dr. Reines can be reached at Northern Berkshire General Surgery at (413) 664-5999.
